Where to Buy Vegetarian and Vegan Freeze Dried Foods

by Trevor Holewinski
where are the vegetables

I know what many preppers will be thinking: There are no vegetarians after the apocalypse.

That may be true. Life for a vegetarian after societal collapse will not be easy. You will need caloric intake and your present ability to discriminate where those calories come from will be greatly diminished. Six months after the collapse, are you, the vegan, going to pass up on freshly harvested whitetail deer? I doubt it.

Being a Vegetarian After the Apocalypse

While it may be true that vegetarians will have to sacrifice dietary habits after a collapse, there are vegetarian preppers, hikers, and campers who seek out long-term freeze dried food options today. And while there are fewer options available to them, vegetarian and vegan freeze dried foods do exist.

What’s more, you meat lovers will desperately need to balance your diet of squirrel and deer with actual dietary diversity, i.e. fruits and vegetables. It is imperative that you add these to your food supply regardless of whether you have a garden or not.

If you read SHTF Blog’s Prepper’s Guide to Freeze Dried Foods, you know that freeze-drying allows for the long-term preservation of meat in lightweight packaging for easy transport and storage. While many people love their meat (and many freeze dried food manufacturers reflect that through their products), after extensive research, I found long-term animal-friendly foods for vegetarians and vegans to consider.

I have organized the following products by meal type and manufacturer. Life as a vegetarian after societal collapse will be tough.

Shopping for Vegetarian and Vegan Freeze Dried Foods

Many beginning preppers immediately think of Mountain House when it comes to buying freeze dried foods, but in many cases, you can actually find better deals buying in bulk from other manufacturers who do not have the same name recognition but are generating equally good products.

Freeze dried foods should not be your sole source of long-term food supply for survival scenarios, but not should your supply of food leave out freeze dried options. Diversity is what you are looking for (and a balanced diet).

To save money, preppers should watch for deals and different manufacturers have different deals going on at different times. Watch for them! Most of my suggestions come from these five companies:

  1. Augason Farms
  2. ReadyWise
  3. Legacy Food Storage
  4. My Patriot Supply
  5. Valley Food Storage

Valley Food Storage (at the time of this writing during COVID-19), is sold out of many of their products. This is something else to stay mindful of – during any SHTF-type event, freeze dried foods fly off the shelves and the time it takes to bring them back to market can be very long. In other words, do not wait until you need to store this food – buy it now!

Freeze Dried Vegetarian Breakfasts

Buckets of food like this one are popular among preppers.

What quick all-in-one breakfast options to add non-meat vitamins and nutrients to your long-term food storage? Get yourself a breakfast bucket of freeze-dried breakfast delights at Legacy Food Storage. This is 36 pounds of food, folks! Each bucket contains these non-GMO meals:

  • Nine-grain cereal mix
  • Maple oatmeal with brown sugar
  • Strawberry creamy wheat
  • Old fashioned pancake mix

Competing with that bucket, My Patriot Supply offers the Ultimate Breakfast Kit from My Patriot Supply has a 140-serving variety pack the combines freeze-dried and powdered items including:

My Patriot Supply also offers their own “breakfast bucket.”
  • Maple Grove oatmeal
  • Buttermilk pancakes
  • Strawberries
  • Strawberry flavored creamy wheat
  • Powdered whey milk
  • Orange energy drink
  • Scrambled eggs

Mountain House has freeze-dried granola with milk and blueberries that comes in either a 39 oz can or individual-sized pouch to start your morning off right. Strawberry granola from Peak Refuel is a great breakfast option for your favorite vegetarian.

Don’t Forget the Coffee!

Breakfast is not breakfast without a hot cup of coffee, and nothing is more vegan than coffee. My Patriot Supply knows this. That is why they offer freeze-dried Franklin’s Finest Colombian coffee, which has a shelf-life of up to 30 years!

Vegan Breakfasts

There are not many options for those that wish to eschew all animal products, but I did find a delightful Mountain Berry Granola. This is a breakfast for vegan champions with rice milk, strawberries, blueberries, and raspberries.

Vegetarian Lunches and Dinners

Mountain House will give you freeze-dried mac and cheese or a pasta primavera blend with broccoli, cauliflower, zucchini, and peppers in a Parmesan cheese sauce.

Legacy Food Storage has a set of eight vegetarian meals perfect for lunch or dinner. All of these freeze-dried meals are non-GMO and gluten-free too. This entree bucket includes:

  • White bean chili mix

The 120 serving entree bucket has 12 different entrees including:

  • Italian pasta with marinara
  • Pasta alfredo

  • Stroganoff
  • Vegetable and rotini pasta

Finally, Valley Food Storage has several vegetarian, gluten and soy free entrees such as:

Vegan Lunches and Dinners

Again, there weren’t as many cheese and milk-free alternatives. However, the Mango Habanero Chili and Enchilada Beans and Rice meals from Valley Food Storage are not only vegetarian, gluten and soy-free, but also dairy-free. They are GMO and preservative-free as well. Three Bean Chili Mac from Peak Refuel is high in protein and vegan. It has macaroni noodles, vegetables, and beans in a sweet sauce.

Vegetarian Meat Flavoring

Pasta, grains, vegetables, and fruit are a no-brainer with freeze-dried foods. However, if you have a hankering for meat but are animal-friendly, then take a look at these no-kill flavoring options you can use in stews, soups or as meat extenders! Add them to your favorite freeze-dried meal and voila! Everybody is satisfied.

I am always intrigued by omnivores writing about vegetarian/vegan food choices. I personally would not buy the products you suggest just because they are expensive and may contain additives I don’t want. One of the best ways for vegetarian survivalists is to practice sustainable preparedness. A piece of remote property, grow your own produce, have an orchard and a water source. Live off grid. Some even go as far as growing their own grains/beans. A couple books on the topic are YOU CAN SURVIVE (https://youcansurvive.org/store/) and SUSTAINABLE PREPAREDNESS (https://www.susprep.com/product-category/books/) that some might find helpful.
