A Complete List of Post-Apocalyptic Movies

by Derrick James
post-apocalyptic movies
The Road Warrior (1981)

Post-apocalyptic movies? I love them. Always have. I appreciate the best ones, of course. You know the ones, the Mad Max series, Children of Men, The Road, etc. There are many more, however. There was a massive production of post-apocalyptic movies in the 1980s when people had a strong fear of nuclear war. Many of the films produced during that time were low-budget, and it shows.

But if you are looking for post-apocalyptic movies to watch, let this post be the mothership of listings. There are more and more post-apocalyptic movies being produced ever year, so this list will never – ever – be complete. That’s why this post will forever – and ever – be updated.

The big question in building such a list is: How do you define “post-apocalyptic movies”? So many post-apocalyptic films (and post-apocalyptic books) cross over into other genres like dystopian, science fiction, and even horror. To answer the question, I have to make a judgment call. I try to determine if the movie is post-apocalyptic first and foremost. For example, zombie-themed movies qualify as post-apocalyptic movies only if they’re set in a future post-apocalyptic environment, not in the present world. Post-apocalyptic movies needs a distinct post-apocalyptic feel.

Please! If you know of post-apocalyptic movies not listed here – leave them in the comments.
I will keep this list updated so that it grows and grows and grows.

If you’re not finding enough movies here, see our complete list of prepper movies.

I have been looking for a movie that I saw that I cannot locate. I think it qualifies as post apocalyptic, but cannot find it. It has a guy that starts rejecting the futuristic underground society he is in and starts trying to escape. They are always underground and he is searching for the surface. As he tries to escape, society is tracking him and sends a hunter to retrieve him. They run a constant running cost to retrieve him through out the chases as he is looking for the way out. As he is at the last hatch to the surface(assumed post apocalyptic world) the cost counter exceeds the allowable cost to catch him and the hunter stops as he is about to catch him. He exits to post apocalyptic world not able to go back to society.

Does anyone know the movie name?

Toni K August 17, 2020 - 7:00 pm

I strongly believe the movie you are referring is THX. George Lucas’s early work. Please let me know if it’s this one. And since it’s George Lucas work there are new effects and scenes added just like in Star Wars movies except this time around they are more seamless.

Prepper Press January 5, 2019 - 2:02 pm

I saw Goodbye World. It’s more of a collapse movie than a post-apocalyptic movie.

You’ve got a good list. Personally I would have grouped the “Omega Man” and “Soylent Green”, the three movies based on “I Am Legend” and “The Postman” and “Water World” with Kevin Costner. Those are all great examples of post apocalyptic films. They are up there with “Mad Max” as must watch movies, as well as “The Road” and “The Book of Eli”. “The Colony” was also quite good with some well known actors.
I am surprised you did not list “The Year Zero” which came long before “Red Dawn” and other films that took place at the start of the crisis. There is another movie and I think the title is “Refuge” about a family that leaves their home after hostile people surround it. It’s basically a group that is near starving, trying to make it on scavenged supplies and then they have to find another place. It’s one of those more realistic and relate-able films. Unlike “The Year Zero” this family sort of winged it without being as prepared or equipped and is of course more contemporary.

The list has B movies, low budget and then the more common high dollar production films with well known actors. I think this should be noted just because the lower budget films have a different “feel” and are also often the harder films to find. It’s a long list, but it would help to organize it more by year and style or atmosphere.

Now I know you feel zombie films don’t belong in this category, which I partially agree with, but I like “State of Emergency” made in 2010 because it’s about 4 people living in a vacant warehouse size building with few weapons and no special gear. The film could easily have been about EMP or something besides zombies. Some zombie movies do depict survival related skills and tasks and by the same token, some post apocalyptic, after doomsday films depict a world where people seem to have plenty and are even wasteful with what they have. And “Stakeland”, a movie about mutant vampires also depicts what an apocalypse might look like as people scavenge and hang onto anything useful.

Prepper Press April 5, 2019 - 5:21 pm

Great comment! “Panic in the Year Zero” and “Refuge” are now added.

“The Maze Runner is a series of young adult dystopian science fiction novels written by American author James Dashner.[1][2] The series consists of The Maze Runner (2009), The Scorch Trials (2010) and The Death Cure (2011), as well as two prequel novels, The Kill Order (2012) and The Fever Code (2016), and a companion book titled The Maze Runner Files (2013).”

“The series, revealing details in non-chronological order, tells how the world was devastated by a series of massive solar flares and coronal mass ejections. “

1) It Comes at Night (post pandemic type event)
2) Metro (based on the Russian novel)
3) World War Z, based on the novel by Max Brooks. I believe a sequel is scheduled.
4) Signs, although scifi, great story about unique strengths of individual family members that ultimately aids in their survival.
5) Contagion

Although not a film, Walking Dead series, survival in post-apocalyptic US due to a viral outbreak. There’s an episode where they visit the CDC to find a cure.

There was a movie my mother remembered from around the 1980s. It was a post-apocalyptic world where the government has built a roof over buildings and people cannot go out of the barrier or they would be infected. The government does not allow real, live human babies so they built robot babies for couples who desired to have a child. One day, a man’s wife finds out that she is pregnant. A friend finds out and grows jealous so she destroys her robot child. The government (through her computer I believe) if anything was wrong because the robot sent a message that it was not working. She said that she didn’t know so they (government) said they would send her another. Then, after a few months, they see that the wife has gained weight and they ask her. She says that she doesn’t know and it could be her metabolism slowing down (food wasn’t plentiful so people couldn’t overeat). So then more time goes. things happen, and then around the end, the husband plans to leave and the wife asks something like would their child be able to live out in the bad atmosphere and the husband says that the child would adapt so they leave the barrier. I haven’t been able to find it. Can anyone help?

Ray March 28, 2020 - 9:49 am

Just came across this site. I have one but cant remember name. Was an 80s movie. I think it was a boy and his mom. I remember they picked up an Eastern European girl. She liked the boy but he was oblivious to her advances. Once she fell and made him brush off her jumpsuit bottom. She made a comment about how it looked but went over his head. Anyone know what title it could be?

Thanks for the adds, Dan. I think those suggestions trend more toward science fiction, and while there’s often crossover, there is a line (or I made one at least).

Wow, cool list! I’ll bookmark this page for sure! I have two additions for your list that are totally post-apocalyptic and not sci-fi nor any of that fantasy stuff.

What Still Remains (2018 … I absolutely loved this movie, very memorable also! 9/10)
Into the Void (Just hit the VOD’s a moment ago. Just watching it right now. It’s OK. 7/10)

I’ll let you know if I remember any others that are missing the list. I’ve been collecting these type of movies quite a while.

Sure! Here are some links for it : https://www.imdb.com/title/tt10633454/ and https://www.resonantproductions.com/ it’s an indie movie. I think 7/10 is too generous. 6/10 is more likely the correct review number.

Hi, early 70’s, British T.V. series called Survivors was based on post nuclear group. Pretty good for its day.
I’m sure it got others of my generation interested in Cold War survival.

Now remade (2009) by BBC into “Survivors” series based on Viral Pandemic.
Have just watched first 3 disc DVD.
No zombies.

“World War Z” for sure!

Not sure if I missed it or not, but heard they’re even coming out with a sequel to “A Quiet Place” !!!

crumpy August 29, 2020 - 10:13 am

I really liked:

EMP 333 days
How it ends (everything has gone to shit, but arguably after the apocalypse). Also interesting to figure out what was going on, maybe gamma ray burst?
Cargo (there is some kind of sickness/zombies, but it is well after the outbreak and it appears all of Australia has been infected for a long time. They struggle for food, etc).
Here Alone (similar)
How I live now
Les Affamés/ Ravenous (this film scared me).
100 mornings (Irish film, bleak).

Aaron September 22, 2020 - 6:23 pm

Anyone remember a film where some people on a beach rush into bomb shelter belonging to one of the group after hearing about a nuclear attack in the radio. After a few deaths the survivors take their chances and leave. Turns out it was just an experiment and the world was fine. Trying to find it. Watched in the early to mid 90s. Not the 2015 shelter but almost the same type of plot.

Prepper Press September 22, 2020 - 7:06 pm

I remember that movie! I think it was a “made for TV” movie. It would have been from the 80s.

Michal Laudato September 24, 2020 - 4:21 pm

Wow! I just finished Enola Holmes. It’s on Netflix. I can never get enough of Millie Bobby Brown! I was really hoping to see her in more films after Stranger Things ended.

Winston October 25, 2020 - 1:26 pm

Does anyone remember a survival movie from a few years ago about a family surviving in the wilderness and his daughter’s boyfriend gave away some of their food to strangers? The strangers came back to harm them. It was a realistic flick, no zombies. Thanks

Joe October 29, 2020 - 8:03 pm

I seen that movie, but i cannot remember the name

Winston October 30, 2020 - 6:55 pm

Yeah, it was pretty good. Made a great point about not sharing limited food supplies with strangers.

Joe November 1, 2020 - 9:02 pm

The hyperlinks over the movies name is a bit inconvenience. Myself and most others likely view lists to copy and paste movie names. To increase efficiency I have a text highlighter add-on that brings up a drop menu to (torrent) search engines.

Glen December 15, 2020 - 5:25 pm

There is an obscure Australian film called Beyond Reason about mental patients and their doctors and nurses who go into a nuclear fallout shelter after war breaks out. Most of the film takes place there but they do emerge at the end and civilisation has been destroyed so I think it would classify as post apocalyptic.

Prepper Press December 16, 2020 - 6:54 am

Perfect – thank you.

Holy mother ship of movies. It’ll take me a bit, but I’ll go through them for possible inclusion. Thank you!

AWB January 19, 2021 - 9:16 am

I’m trying to find out the name of a film I saw, probably in the 1980s or 1990s on tv, which I believe was a dubbed foreign language film (not sure where from).
From what I can remember, it was 2 men who may have been astronauts or pilots, who managed to leave their own world and ended up in a subterranean world populated entirely by women who have never seen men before. It’s a comedy, but the men have to evade capture by the “police” of this world, as no men are allowed. The subterranean nature of the new world is because the outside is apparently too polluted/dangerous to live in.
There are a couple of twists in this, which I won’t write just in case anyone finds it and wants to watch it!
Any idea?

Joe February 21, 2021 - 7:06 pm

I have not seen it. However, it reminded me of this outer limits episode – https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0667918/

AWB March 3, 2021 - 5:03 am

Thank you! Yes, sort of similar but obviously produced much later.
I’ll keep hoping someone knows the film I’m after (I have a feeling it might have been an Eastern European one, maybe Polish or similar)

Steve April 4, 2021 - 12:18 pm

‘I Think We’re Alone Now’ – Good post apocalypse movie starring Peter Dinklage.
‘Bad Land – Road to Fury’ – Ok movie with Michael Shannon and Nicholas Hoult
‘Quiet Hour’ – Decent movie with Dakota Blue Richardson and Karl Davies
‘100 Mornings’ – British made movie, not bad.
I’m not sure if this next one qualifies as post apocalypse as it is mostly based around a ‘what if’ theoretical scenario but I really enjoyed it….. ‘After The Dark’ with James D’Arcy and Sophie Lowe

Steve April 7, 2021 - 12:15 am

Another four I just remembered:-
I Am Mother – Good movie starring Hillary Swank and an interesting concept…
The Silence – Decent movie with Stanley Tucci
How It Ends – Decent movie with Forest Whitaker & Theo James
10 Cloverfield Lane – With John Goodman. (I know this ends up being an alien attack in the end so could be classed as a sci-fi cross over but throughout the film this is unknown and a nuclear attack is suspected…… plus, its worth inclusion just for John Goodmans characters awesome fallout bunker set-up. 😉
By the way, well done on the list! Some awesome post apocalypse movies in it…
